Djuretik-symposium i Stockholm i sommar

"Animal ethics concerns the moral status of animals and our human right to use animals in research and agricultural production. How well-founded is the bioethical concept of “an animal”? The aim of the symposium is to develop and concretize the bioethical notion of an animal by asking what contemporary ethology, evolutionary psychology and animal science teaches us about the morally relevant abilities of animals. Is animal welfare something that we are supposed to measure physiologically or can animals communicate their welfare via expressive behaviour? Can moral behaviour be observed in animals? What can we mean by “natural behaviour” in a domestic animal? Considerations in animal ethics can have far-reaching consequences for the use of animals in biomedical research and for agricultural animal husbandry. Scrutiny of the concept of what an animal is, is therefore urgent."
